URPL 5510 Planning Methods I Creating Urban Citizenship through a Virtual Lens
We are a team of Urban Planning students at the University of Colorado Denver that were asked by the Denver Business Improvement District (BID) to assist in helping to locate areas for the placement of 170 new planters in downtown Denver. Denver is emerging as a model city for livability and in order to further this development, a new emphasis on the pedestrian environment is essential. Our goal in this undertaking has been to create an outstanding pedestrian environment by creating a dynamic street scape experience that invites and stimulates the pedestrian through thoughtful placement of the city's new planters.
We began by taking an inventory of existing planters to see which areas in the BID were lacking them. We took this data, along with new criteria for placing planters given to us by the BID, and determined that a few particular corridors in Lower Downtown would benefit the most. Using multiple mobile data collection devices, including GPS-enabled digital cameras, GPS units and Android phones, we captured our data and have uploaded it to an interactive map for you to view.
